Haven't paddled before? Feeling unfit at the moment? Want to get an edge on your fellow competitors? There is no better way to train than to get out on the water and get a feel for what it is like out there!
AROC Sport highly recommends some kind of training before the event to make the experience on the event day more enjoyable for participants. Paddling is a highly enjoyable activity, but requires the use of muscles that are not normally exercised. There are also very simple tips to paddle more effectively that can be given by any kayak outfitters to improve your technique, and your style!
Getting some paddling done in the Sydney Harbour before the event is a great way to prepare for the event. You will get to discover the area, estimate your time on the water, improve your paddling skills and have a great time.
Manly Boat & Kayak Centre has a modern range of hirable equipment from user-friendly Self-Drive leisure boats to the very popular Single, Double and Triple Kayaks. So whether you plan a family picnic, gather some friends for a spot of fishing, don the goggle and snorkel for a Marine world experience or surprise somebody special with a sunset cruise or paddle - it's up to you.

That's it! You've tasted the joys of paddling and you've got the bug! Or you simply want more information about canoeing, kayaking and all things related to paddling in Australia...

Bring drinking water or electrolytes to rehydrate while paddling to prevent heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Protect yourself from the sun: wear a hat, sun glasses and sunscreen. The sun is reflected on the water surface and more dangerous than on the beach even!
If you are prone to rashes -especially under the arms from the paddling motion-, bring some Vaseline or BodyGlide along with you to prevent chaffing.
Wearing gloves can help prevent blisters if you are prone to them.
Wear clothes and shoes that can be wet: even if you don’t go in the water, spraying will happen! Leave your valuables with someone on shore, or make sure they are protected in waterproof bags (dry bags) or double zip-locks.
To minimise muscle pains, stretch before and after you paddle: your back will thank you for it!
Train, train, train: it’s not enough to be fit! Paddling uses very specific muscle groups that are seldom used in day-to-day life. The best way to train is to go out there and paddle! Do it in the morning before work as a workout, or make a family outing of it on weekends! Check out the training section above for deals with kayak outfitters and training groups.
