The Nasty Nurse prologue was a fundraising event for local Eurobodalla Coast rider Brendan Johnston. AROC donated all entry fees and the event has raised over $5000 made up from:
Entry fees = $3,900
Event prize money which couldn't be awarded = $1,200
Auction of Adidas sunglasses = $200
Donation from Sarah Collingwood (donated her marshal fee) = $150
Total $5,100
AROC is also donating $2,500 to the Eurobodalla Cycling Club to help rebuild their MTB trail network and has allocated $3,000 to the local Apex riders to do work on the other duel use MTB/trail bike tracks. AROC will also be assisting directly with the rebuilding and clearing of the trails and will be engaging the necessary people to help clear the tracks over the coming year.
We certainly hit the weather. The night of the event and Mogo experienced the worst wind storm in 87 years. There were trees down all over the roads between Batemans Bay and Narooma and power out along most of the coast. The forecast was for the wind to substantially decrease so we were hoping that once the sun came up things would be looking better. The marquees at the event hub had been decimated. Paper work, signs scattered beyond the oval, registration sheets found across the Princes Highway. But the wind did start to die down, we were hopeful and we went to check the track - it was as if a cyclone had gone through the whole forest. It was certainly not something we could quickly fix up. We wanted to try to hold a race no matter how short as we knew that it would be impossible to reschedule the full event on the following weekend. It will take months to clear trees from the tracks and access roads. In fact, it will be amazing if we can have the tracks ready for the Angry Doctor 2011. After 3 hours of searching using 6 different teams we came up with a 20km course that, with less chainsawing and dragging of trees, was made accessible for bikes and vehicles. We began remarking and moving marshals into place. The wind had completely gone. WIth 30 minutes to go a very distressed friend came in having just gone for a run in the forest along a main fire road that formed part of the new course. A huge tree had fallen almost on top of her only just missing her. That was it - we decided we couldn't safely use any track within any area of forest. So with 20 minutes to go before the new start time, we were about to cancel the race completely. However after telling you there would be an amended race and watching you patiently wait at Mogo Oval for the amended race we just couldn't send you home without something so we quickly came up with a very boring 8km course out in the open of the main powerline corridor. This race did not turn out well. We didn't have time to finish even sparse marking by the start time and we didn't want to keep you waiting any longer. Then an angry farmer came out apparently wielding a gun. So that got race canned after just one lap.....It seemed that any luck wasn't with us
We are devastated that you were not able to experience the amazing course we had worked so hard to bring you. A team of 9 spent the lead up 7 days and nights raking and fixing the tracks, building 4 new bridges and hanging out the markings. We went through 16 garden rakes in raking 90km of the track. We were extremely excited to be bringing you by far the nicest tracks for a 100km race in Australia. We had really put our heart and soul into it as we always do and for everyone to miss out on what were the most perfect tracks is just heartbreaking. None of us even got a chance to ride them before the carnage.
Here are some pictures of the track on race day. It is like this for the whole 100km. It is very rare to find a clear section longer then 50m. Our team has been busy clearing the track of our course markers (a job that takes 4 days). There was no wind but we still saw 4 huge trees fall in the forest today.

We really hit a completely unexpected and not forecast natural disaster and only wish that we could have had better luck with the weather. It was impossible to hold the event on the intended course. To be in the forest was unsafe and is still unsafe now. The course was impossible to use and the access roads were cut off making first aid access unavailable. We are unable to hold the event on the back-up date of the 13th September (which is why we updated the website on Sunday morning when we realised it would take months and not just one week to clear the course of all the fallen trees and hanging up trees). With all costs of the day having already been spent we are not able to offer refunds. That is why there is a no refund policy if we have to cancel the event on the day. We would however like to offer all competitors from this year a guaranteed entry for the 2011 event and 10% off next year's entry price.
We thank you all for your understanding and support and particularly those who stayed around as we tried to salvage something and those who offered their help. Here are some of the positives that we have come up with from the weekend:
The wind didn't occur after the race had started while people were out on the course
There was no rubbish, gel packets etc on the course
People didn't have to spend heaps of money on their bikes after the race getting them fixed
Everyone who stayed for the presentation got a prize
It didn't rain on the Sunday and the tracks were in perfect condition underneath the trees and debris
No-one got shot by the angry landholder in the short race.
We hope to see you in 2011 for a hopefully windless, rainless, "normal" weekend of racing and riding in Mogo State Forest.
