Event Instructions

There are a few important things to remember:

1. Read the event rules

2. Bring a signed indemnity form to registration

3. Kayaks are provided. You must use the kayaks provided. You may bring your own paddles and PFDs or you can use the equipment provided. The paddles provided are fairly heavy plastic paddles. You will find the paddling nicer if you use your own paddles.

4. If providing your own paddles you will need to clearly label them with your team number and tie all paddles for your team together. We will transport your paddles and PFDs for you. We take all care but no responsibility for the transport of your paddles. You may like to put them in a paddle bag to protect them.

5. Support crew are not required. See the equipment page for how the logistics will work. Each team must provide plastic boxes which will will transport around for you.

Competency Testing

Competency checks will be conducted on the Friday from 12 - 3pm. You must attend this session. Teams will not be permitted to start the event unless they have successfully completed the competency checks. The checks will include the following:

1. A short navigation exercise and questionnaire. This will include taking a compass bearing and picking a safe route choice between locations.

2. A first aid demonstration and questionnaire

3. Surf paddling where teams will be required to paddle out through the waves, jump off the kayak, get back on the kayak and surf back in to shore. Teams need to demonstrate they can steer the kayak.

4. A river paddling demonstration

5. Team photo taken

Whilst we won't be testing your bike maintenance abilities you should know how to fix a flat tire and a broken chain. You need to carry spare tires, tire levers, chain breaker, oil etc. We will not be picking up teams that have bike mechanical issues.

Kayak Instruction

If you would like to brush up on your kayaking technique and safety before the event, Bay and Beyond Sea Kayak Tours who are based in South Durras are offering a 10% discount on their normal tuition rates. contact Carolyn and Phil - ph: (02) 4478-7777 Mobile: 0404477288; bayandbeyond@ozemail.com.au; www.naturecoast-tourism.com.au/bayandbeyond

Food / Water

Water will be available at the transition areas. The time between transition areas will be anything from a couple of hours to 15 hours. You will need to be self sufficient during each leg of the race.

Food is available at the HQ - Beachcombers Camp. There is a take-away selling hamburgers, chicken burgers, vege burgers, toasted sandwiches, milkshakes, drinks, coffee etc. there are no hot chips. There is a small shop with some supplies but don't expect your transition area food from here. The closest Coles or Woolworths supermarket is in Narooma (about a 20 minute drive).

For dinner on Friday night, if you don't feel like take-away, you will need to bring your own food to cook. There are plenty of BBQs available. There is nothing else at Beachcombers or at Potato Point. The nearest would be Tuross or Narooma.

Pets

Please note that Pets are not permitted at Beachcombers Camp as it is located within the National Park.
