Q: What is involved in an AROC Sport Adventure? What can I expect?
A: We have put up some tips for novices and a sample course on a separate page in the website. <<click here>> to check it out.
Q: What are the approximate distances for an AROC Sport Adventure?
A: There are lots of different legs in an AROC Sport Adventure so it will never be very far on any one discipline before you get to swap to something else. All the courses are different but as a bit of a kind the total distances for each discipline are approximately:
Q: Can you arrange races in other cities or places in Australia?
A: We currently run races in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. We can also arrange corporate or special events anywhere in Australia! Or in fact anywhere in the world! Just ask us for further information.
Q: Can you help me to find a team mate?
A: Use our discussion forums to find a team or a team member. there is a specific team mate finder forum. Click here to check out the forums
You can also send an email seeking team mates through the Sleepmonsters forum at www.sleepmonsters.com.au.
Q: How does the paddling section work?
A: Kayaks, life jackets and paddles are provided for all AROC Sport events. The kayaks are especially designed for AROC Sport. They are a Toy Boy Voyager III hard plastic 3 person sit-on-top. All 3 people paddle. These kayaks track very well and are easy to steer.
Q: Is it possible to try the boats beforehand?
A: Kayaks are available for hire in Canberra for $45 for up to 3 hours. This includes the kayak, paddles and life jackets as well as drop off and pick up from either Lake Burley Griffin or Lake Ginninderra.
This is a service we provide for competitors so that you can have a practice. It is not a formal hire business. As such availability will depend on when we have time to drop off and pick up boats.
We can also arrange hiring of kayaks in Canberra for special events. We have 100 of these kayaks so if you would like to have a kayak outing with your work or friends then we might be able to organise something.
All kayak hire comes with paddles and life jackets.
Contact us to make a booking.
Q: Can you do the race as a team of 2?
A: No. Teams must consist of 3 persons. You can enter the mixed, male, female or corporate category. All categories must have 3 persons in each team.
Q: Is there a minimum age limit?
A: No. You can be any age to enter the event. However if you are under 18 years of age you will need your parent or guardian to sign your liability waiver form.
Q: Do I need a support crew?
A: No. Competitors must not receive any outside assistance during the race. Friends and family are of course most welcome to come and watch (see spectator info).
Q: Can I do the event as a relay?
A: No. Everyone in the team must do everything together and travel together at all times. That is, all 3 members paddle together, mountain bike together and run/walk together. It is not a relay style event.
Q: I don’t think I am fit enough to do the whole event – 2 to 5.5 hours sounds like a long time.
A: “Don’t wait until you think you are fit enough before you enter an adventure race. Chances are you’ll never think you are fit enough and therefore you’ll never try out a race.”
(Alina McMaster, OutDoor Magazine Oct/Nov 03)
There is more to these events then just being fit. You have to work out where you are going, read maps, follow instructions. It is not just head down, bum up and follow the marked trail like in a triathlon. There are parts that you will walk, parts where you will stop – you go at your own pace and you have the added benefit of having the others in your team to help you along. It is amazing how fast time goes by.
Remember, it is not necessarily the fastest or the strongest who succeed in adventure racing. Far more important factors for success are good teamwork, strategy, perseverance, adaptability, organisation and navigation.
The whole idea is to have fun. Don’t miss out.
Q: I have no navigation experience. Will I be able to compete?
A: Yes. This race series is for adventure racing beginners as well as experienced people. Therefore we try to make the navigation simple by locating checkpoints only at main features which are clearly marked on the maps.
While it would be an advantage to have someone in your team who can read a map, we do offer free navigation training prior to the start of each race. Check out the exact time in the particular race information. In these practical sessions we will cover all the things you will need to know such as:
If you want some good practice try out one of the twilight orienteering events held in Canberra and Sydney every Wednesday night during daylight saving.
