Adventure for Kids

All kids, whether athletic or not, have the ability to have fun, enjoy the outdoors and excel in adventure racing.

They are calling it Generation O-besity. With at least one in four kids classified as obese in Australia we are about to hit a dangerous epidemic. Obesity is not good for anyone and it is definitely not a good way to start as a kid. Obesity causes liver degeneration, hormone imbalances, clogged arteries, difficultly in breathing. It places immense stress on the heart and can lead to heart failure. It can also cause diabetes, kidney failure and even death.

Obesity is caused primarily by poor diet and an inactive lifestyle. In addition to the physical problems caused by obesity and an inactive lifestyle coupled with poor diet also results in low concentration levels, poor performance at school, low motivation and low self esteem.

We must try to stem the increase of childhood obesity and provide ways in which to encourage a better lifestyle. Not all children want to play rugby, cricket or netball. Not all children have the talent to be champion track and filed athletes or swimmers. Not all kids like exercise or sport in its traditional form.

All kids however, whether athletic or not, have the ability to have fun, enjoy the outdoors and excel in adventure racing. Adventure racing incorporates much more then just fitness and athletic prowess. Adventure racing can be done at any level with or without the pressure of competition. Adventure racing requires teamwork, navigational skills, strategy and perseverance. It enables kids to learn different skills such as map reading, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking. It helps teach kids how to work effectively in a team, improves self confidence and highlights the fun of the outdoors. Kids love an adventure with friends and that is just what adventure racing is.

Adventure racing requires teams of 3 – 5 people to complete the whole course together. The course consists of a series of checkpoints which teams must navigate to using map and compass and following instructions. There are multiple short sections on foot, boat and bike so there is lots of variety and not too long at any one discipline. There are different ways to get to checkpoint so route choice and strategy is important.

Adventure racing provides an opportunity for physical exercise in the outdoors without restricting rules. It promotes clear thinking, team support and motivation and confidence. It provides skills for life and opportunities for a better lifestyle long term. It results in clearer thinking and enthusiasm for school. It provides a fun activity which anyone can enjoy.
